Virtual Luncheon with James Bezan
Since 2004, James Bezan has been successfully elected six times as the Member of Parliament in the riding of Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman. Over the course of his parliamentary career, he has chaired the House of Commons' Standing Committees for Agriculture and Agri-Food (2007-2008); Environment (2008-2011); and National Defence (2011-2013). Bezan served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence from 2013-2015, and was active on files dealing with military procurement, mental health in the armed forces, the war against ISIS, and Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Since 2015, Bezan has served in the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Minister for National Defence and is Vice-Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence. He is currently active on equipping our troops, eliminating sexual misconduct in the armed forces, instituting military justice reforms and fixing defence procurement.
Bezan has been outspoken advocate on Ukrainian sovereignty, democracy, and human rights, and as a result, was one of thirteen Canadian officials sanctioned by the Russian government in 2014. For his work on Ukrainian issues he has been recognized with numerous awards both in Canada and abroad, including the ‘Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise’ (Ukraine’s highest civilian award) for his 2008 private members’ bill to recognize the Holomodor as genocide. Bezan recently sponsored Bill S-226, the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (Sergei Magnitsky Law) in the House of Commons. The Bill received unanimous support and was passed into law on October 18, 2017.
